Regular Meeting

January 21, 2026

 

Supervisor Kevin VanTiem called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance at 6:32 pm. Board members present: Kevin VanTiem, Susan Walker, Steve Broka, Ed Schroeder, and Ron Brabon. The Board reviewed the Clerk’s minutes as they were presented. Susan Walker made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. Motion supported by Ron Brabon. Ayes – 5, Nays - 0, motion carried.  Ron Brabon made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Motion supported by Ed Schroeder.  Roll call: Kevin VanTiem - Yes, Susan Walker - Yes, Steve Broka - Yes, Ron Brabon - Yes, Ed Schroeder - Yes, Nays - none. Motion carried. Susan Walker made a motion to pay the bills as present. Motion supported by Ed Schroeder. A Roll call: Kevin VanTiem - Yes, Susan Walker - Yes, Steve Broka - Yes, Ron Brabon - Yes, Ed Schroeder - Yes, Nays - none. Motion carried.   

 

Commissioner Report:  State Representative Mike Hoardley applied for a state grant for 2.5 million to restore Trout Lake Dam. February 14, 2026 is the next Vintage Snowmobile races at the fairgrounds. Also, on February 13, 2026 the Legislative Breakfast has been moved to the Beaverton Activity Center at 7:30am. They’re held the 2nd Friday of the month. Cost is $60 for the series or $15 per meeting.

 

Fire Board Report:  There were 41 fire runs between 11/26/2025 until 12/29/2025. There were six in Buckeye Township, mostly due to downed power lines; one fire run, a german shepherd went through the ice by the Cedar River Bridge on Howard Road. Grout Township has a new board representative. His name is Randy Zdrojewski. The bill from Redline Lawn Care for removing the snow and treating the ice for November and December was $5,115 for the fire department. The chief reported a grant with FEMA has been denied. The grant would have bought 40 oxygen air tanks that have a service life of 15 years. The tanks have a cost of $700 each and the valves on the tanks can be reused.

 

Hall Report:  There were three rentals for this period. As of January 1, 2026 renters are being notified we no longer allow confetti to be used in the hall. Furnace filters were cleaned and replaced. The rolled paper towel dispenser was replaced in the north bathroom. Chris Baker was inquiring about renting the hall and stated he was an employee of Consumers Energy. He spoke about a rebate for LED lighting and thermostat in the hall.  The clerk will be in contact with him.

 

Public Comment:   A gentleman was at the meeting with concerns about the road conditions on Hawkins Road. He wanted to know if the ditches were going to be cleared out. Supervisor VanTiem state Hawkins Road is on the agenda to have the ditches cleared.

OLD:  Timber thinning was brought back up by Trustee Ron Brabon about thinning in 2026. Gladwin County has a new forester and his name is Mike. Discussion was had on marking the trees using the diameters method. Ron stated he would call a gentleman in Auburn, who we have dealt with before, to give an estimate. He also stated about contacting the Mike if he could attend our next meeting.

 

There was discussion of checking for asbestos in the insulation in the ceiling. Kevin will contact QES to have floor and ceiling tile to have them tested. Also discussed was how we are going to put insulation in the walls. One possibility was removing the crown molding on the baseboards and going up.

The annual Poverty Resolution for 2026 was discussed. A motion was made by Ron Brabon to accept the Poverty Resolution 2026, seconded by Ed Schroeder. Roll call: Kevin VanTiem - Yes, Susan Walker - Yes, Steve Broka - Yes, Ron Brabon - Yes, Ed Schroeder - Yes, Nays - none. Motion carried.

The annual Poverty Application for 2026 was discussed. A motion was made by Susan Walker to accept the Poverty Application 2026, seconded by Ron Brabon. Roll call: Kevin VanTiem - Yes, Susan Walker - Yes, Steve Broka - Yes, Ron Brabon - Yes, Ed Schroeder - Yes, Nays - none. Motion carried.

The clerk would like to set up a budget meeting after the February meeting. The board set the budget meeting for February 25, 2026 at the Buckeye Township Hall for 6pm.

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting motion made by Susan Walker, seconded by Ron Brabon. Roll call: Kevin VanTiem - Yes, Susan Walker - Yes, Steve Broka - Yes, Ron Brabon - Yes, Ed Schroeder - Yes, Nays - none. Motion carried.  Meeting was adjourned at 7:20 pm.
